President · 2024–2026

It is an honour to serve as President of the Sri Lanka Orthodontic Society. Building on our society’s commitment to elevating orthodontic standards in Sri Lanka, my tenure will focus on academic excellence, international engagement, and public awareness.

We will encourage greater participation in international conferences and expand our academic programme through quarterly Zoom lectures by renowned speakers. Our Biennial Conference in 2026 will bring together local and international experts to exchange ideas and advance the specialty.

We also plan a public awareness campaign to improve understanding of orthodontic care and its role in oral health. I look forward to working with our members to strengthen professional excellence and broaden public understanding of orthodontics in Sri Lanka.

Dr Ajith Premaratne

President, Sri Lanka Orthodontic Society · 2024–2026

Helpful Information

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about orthodontics and orthodontic treatment in Sri Lanka.

Who is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dentist trained to diagnose, prevent, and treat teeth and jaw irregularities. They correct existing conditions and are trained to identify problems that may develop in the future. Orthodontists work with people of all ages, from children to adults.

When should I visit an Orthodontist?

You might need to see an orthodontist if you have crooked, overlapped, twisted or gapped teeth. Common orthodontic treatments include traditional braces, clear aligners and removable retainers. As a general rule of thumb a child should be evaluated by an Orthodontist between the ages of 7–8 years.

Do braces hurt?

If you wear braces it is completely normal to experience soreness or discomfort when you first have them fitted, or when you have the brackets and wires tightened. Most people will experience mild-to-moderate discomfort or pain when they first get braces.

How long do I have to wear braces?

The average treatment time for traditional metal braces is 12–24 months. More complex dentofacial problems may take longer.

Are there treatment options other than braces?

Treatment options can vary from simple habit interventions, removable appliances to fixed braces. Clear aligners and retainers also play a major role. More complex problems such as cleft and skeletal deformities require surgery along with braces.
